Tony Shiels (1938 - ongoing)

Artworks | Biography

Tony was born in Salford, Manchester in 1938. He moved to St.Ives, Cornwall in 1958 until 1964. During this key period and location for the development of late Modernism Tony soon established himself with fellow artists Lanyon, Frost and Hilton and poet WS Graham as part of the Gurnards Head gang. As one of the youngest and most creative artists working alongside the ‘middle generation’.

His fusion of landscape, or seascape, with abstraction and figuration not only place him in the St.Ives tradition but see him as part of a much larger debate about the figure in modernism.
